Agave Abstract

We are fortunate to live in the Southwest US, where we can appreciate the beautiful colors you find in unexpected places like the agave leaves. This is the same palette you can see in the desert landscape. Oil on canvas 20" x 24"

A SHAMELESS PLUG (er, I mean Press Release)

"Over the Fourth of July weekend in 2009, Relish underwent a significant expansion, essentially taking over the space vacated by the business next door. With additional tables, the restaurant is now open for lunch seven days a week and on Fridays and Saturdays for dinner. The unveiling of a more expansive space for edible art is fittingly coupled with a display of fine art by multi-talented Albuquerque artist Claudia Goodell, a self-taught painter whose work is displayed in galleries throughout America and online galleries throughout the world–and now at Relish. Fine food and fine art. What a great combination!"

12" Vinyl Record SOLD - I love the colors and the unique perspective of this one. In preparing the "canvas" for this painting I applyed a mix of titanium white and light yellow cadmium with a palette knife to add a great deal of texture all over. I used thinned oils for the subsequent layers, where I defined the shapes and values, leaving some of the original background exposed for the small amount of negative space in this piece.

I really enjoy painting on these and since I still have more records along with the reference images I've collected, I figured I'll keep doing more. The reference photo for this came from a recent vacation in Maui. Oil on 12" vinyl record $300

Art Show at Local Restaurant

I will have some pieces hanging for 4-6 weeks at Relish Restaurant at 8019 Menual, N.E. beginning Tuesday, July 6th for the grand re-opening of their newly expanded location, where they will now be offering a dinner menu in addition to fabulous lunch choices - Go check it out, and say hi to the owner, Tony!

What's the Point?

In July of 2009 there was an online show called "Ripped Off", where artist members of EBSQ Arts paired off to copy a piece done by another artist, but in their own individual style. I paired with an artist named Torrie Smiley and copied her original, which was in acrylic. Oil on artist panel 9" X 12"

NEWS: Flower Series on 12" Vinyl Records accepted in juried art show

I am honored and thrilled to announce that two of the four macro flower pieces done on 12" vinyl records were submitted and accepted in a juried art show called: In Full Bloom, which will run from July 18th to August 14 at Mills Pond House Gallery in St. James, NY. This will be my first juried art show, and I am quite excited.

Mills Pond House Gallery is operated by Smithtown Township Arts Council, a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization. With ten exhibition opportunities each year, artists from almost every state in the nation have exhibited there over the past 34 years. Guest jurors contribute to the critical dimension of the selected works in the gallery, providing a venue for artists working in a wide variety of media and subject.

Rose Pellicano:
Botanical artist Rose Pellicano’s work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and Japan, and has been included in numerous prestigious exhibitions at the Horticultural Society of New York, the Bruce Museum, the U.S. Botanic Garden, and Chicago Botanic Garden, among others. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, in Pittsburgh, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Florilegium. Rose’s work has been featured in Horticulture Magazine and The Gardener, and Brooklyn Botanic Garden 2008 Calendar among others. She is a fellow of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Florilegium Society, a founding member of Art Botanica, and she teaches botanical painting at Old Westbury Gardens, New York.

Well, I finally revisited this piece and finished it. Originally I was going for a graphic style with clean lines, but what came out is more flowing and painterly. SOLD

Prickly Pear Bloom - Triptych

I have updated this photo based on my most recent work. The center of the bloom still needs to be added, and then I can paint the edges of the boards to finish it. I will continue to post my progress.

I really like the complexity of diptychs and triptychs, and I have wanted to create an assymetrical one. Cactus blooms have also intrigued me, so I blended the two ideas for this piece. This is not a commissioned piece, but just something I wanted to do.

Well here is my final entry for the NYC show, ART on Record: Volume II. Sadly I have run out of time and won't be able to submit a 5th entry, but I am pleased with what I have done in a short period of time. The entries will be on exhibit and for sale at APW Gallery in NYC through the month of May. If you happen to be there during that time check out the show and take pictures/video for me!

I am happy to report that this project forced me outside my comfort zone by introducing a new surface on which to paint. It was certainly a growth period for me, and I did enjoy the process very much. Who knows, maybe I'll paint more macros on records....

Edits and Updates

Well,I decided to scrap the sunflower I had been working on because I just wasn't "feelin' it". I covered the canvas with gesso, and will start anew, BUT in the meantime a new project has crossed my studio. I will spend the next few weeks working on a submission to an art exhibit which will take place during the month of May in NYC! I will share the details as I progress this week, so stay tuned.....

"Dog Fighting is Warped"

This was an assigned piece, and it really forced me to experiment with the darker side of art. I was asked to use a warped grid superimposed onto a b & w photo, then recreate the images using charcoal on paper in some of the grid areas, but adjust them to match the contours of the warped sections. I had just read an article in Forbes that really conveyed the visciousness and horrificness of dog fighting, and it profoundly affected me. The distorted nature of this project really lent itself to portraying those feelings. It ain't no floral!

"Sunflower Corner" Day 6 - Completed (no, really)

Well, I thought I was finished, but my art critic, (my husband Lenny) said two things were bugging him. The first were the two background sky areas that were very light colored, so I added more blue. The second was that the center of the flower was not curved enough at the top, so I added more bulk to it. NOW, I am finished!

Well, I have mixed feelings about finishing this piece. I could hardly wait to see how it would turn out, but I really loved working on it. Sorry about the tilt of the photo and the space between the two canvases, but the bottoms are wet.

I know it's not the focus of this photo, but the apron I'm wearing was signed by the entire kindergarten class I team taught back in 1983 when my daughter Amy was just starting school. Her signature is on there as well, so I love to wear it when I paint.

A day at the dunes

We drove up to Leadville, CO on Thursday so Lenny could compete in the Leadville 100 mountain bike race on Saturday. He was able to finish the race in 10+ hours, and now can actually say he competed with Lance Armstrong who came in second place!

Other highlights of the weekend include seeing friends Adrian and Margo from Colorado, who we haven't seen in too long, hanging out with Amy & her friend Lindsey, and cheering on Lenny and his teammates Mike, Doug & John. The low spot was me getting altitude sickness immediately upon entering the town of Leadville at 6:30 pm on Thursday(altitude 10,430 ft.), visiting the ER at 10:30 PM, getting a steroid shot in the butt, and taking Diomox, steroids and oxygen for the entire weekend.

Sunday night we drove down to Monte Vista, CO and spent the night at The Mansion B & B, which I would highly recommend. Monday we drove out to the Great Sand Dunes,hiked up to the top and then checked out the surge flows in the river below. We ate a nice picnic lunch and then hiked up a trail and crossed a creek to a beautiful waterfall.

The lack of oxygen, hiking, and sun left me feeling like a bit of a trainwreck, but I'll resume painting that sunflower soon!

I am certainly enjoying everything about this painting! The interaction of colors and shapes, and background vs foreground keep it interesting, and the gestural quality of the flower is very playful. I am torn because I want to see the finished product, but the process is so much fun!

Sorry this photo is not very clear, but it is difficult to capture the vine charcoal sketch and the notations for shapes and colors.

I don't know what it is about sunflowers, maybe it has to do with being Italian, but I can't seem to get enough of them! I am really stepping outside my normal style and trying a more graphic approach with this one. The shapes in it just grabbed my attention. I also decided to split the composition into two canvases, something else I've never tried!
